Choosing Who To Learn From

Marketing For The Tribe #018

The best marketers are always trying to level up their skills.

This is a well known fact.

Learning is a really important part of the life of any business person.

You could read books. Take courses. Listen to podcasts.

The tools are endless.

But how do you actually learn?

How do you know who to listen to?

Why some things work while others don’t?

I’ve asked myself these questions for a very long time.

Before I tell you my thoughts on this, answer the following question.

Would you rather learn money-making skills from a guy who generated $1 million in sales...

Or from someone who claims to have made just $10,000?

Most people say the first without thinking about it.

$1M beats $10k every day, right?

Not exactly.

If you ask me that question…

I say:

"It depends."

Before you discard me for a fool, keep reading.

You're about to find out what I mean, why it makes more sense than you might think, and most importantly...

How it will make you more money in the end.

Let's begin.

My name is Nick Tribe and I’m a DJ, marketer, and entrepreneur.

I’ve spent the last few years studying from the most successful marketers & entrepreneurs worldwide.

I’ve read countless books, attended countless courses, and devoured countless pieces of information on marketing and entrepreneurship.

I’m now building a marketing company that starts, grows, and monetize brands leveraging AI, direct response marketing, and sales funnels.

It doesn't take much to stumble upon huge claims on the internet.

Big, flashy numbers and promises of all kinds.

“Generated $1.2M in total sales”

“Zero to 6 figures in 6 months”

“7 high-ticket clients in 2 months”

Ever find yourself scrolling through those?

Yeah, me too.

It's easy to get swept up in the allure of that.

The money. The success. The fame.

You look at all of this and you start thinking.

What are they doing? Why are so successful? How is this possible?

And something enters your mind.

A whisper. A thought.

"Maybe you should learn from them"

"They know better..."

"Maybe they have it all figured out. Look at the millions in the bio!"

Sounds familiar?

Makes sense.

After all, who wouldn't want to learn from someone who claims to have generated millions in sales?

But here's the thing.

When it comes to choosing who to learn from, it's not always about the size of the claim.

In fact, sometimes the most valuable lessons come from unexpected sources.

Let's break it down with a little scenario.

Say you're in the market to learn copywriting.

You want to get in the copy game and are looking for someone to show you the way.

Copywriting is a money-making skill.

The vast majority of people who get into it do it for the money.

Now, the infamous question (again).

Would you rather learn from a guy who boasts about generating $1 million in sales...

Or from someone who claims to have made just $10,000?

As stated, most people would probably choose the first guy.

I mean, $1 million sounds pretty impressive, right?

But here's where things get interesting.

Let's say the $1 Million Dollar Case Study comes from a work he did for a big influencer.

He made all the money by creating a sales letter for a product for this dude.

Cool, right?

Definitely not easy.

But here's something to consider.

The big influencer had a big reputation, a massive audience and tons of traffic of people ready to listen to the offer.

Sure, he might have written a decent sales page.

But his success could be largely attributed to factors beyond his control.

Now, compare that to the second guy.

Let's say he's only made $10,000, but with a twist.

He did it WITHOUT a big list, a massive audience, or a brand name to back him up.

Completely from scratch.

Pre-selling a product that didn't exist, for a brand that didn't exist, to a cold audience.

He had to hustle, grind, and figure things out on his own.

Huh. Interesting.

Now, let me ask the question again.

Who's the better copywriter?

Who would you like to learn from?

They both have valuable stuff to say. For sure.

But there is no binary option to choose from here.

That’s why I say:”It depends”.

The key is to choose the one who's most relatable to your own situation.

If you're dreaming of working with big-profile clients and want to learn from someone who's been there, done that, then the first guy might be your best bet.

But if you're just starting out and are looking for someone who can teach you how to sell something from scratch, then the second guy might be the way to go.

Even if he didn't make the multi-zillion dollars...yet.

Consider all the things that the second guy knows that the first doesn't.

The second guy knows:

➢ How to create an offer from scratch

➢ How to pre-sell a product to a cold audience

➢ How to turn complete strangers into paying customers

➢ How to get sales even if you don't have a massive audience or a big reputation

And on and on.

First guy doesn't know that (sorry first guy, no offense though).

He only worked with high profile influencers. His ‘selling’ environment is different.

It’s one thing to create an offer for someone with a big name, a great offer, and tons of testimonials.

It’s a COMPLETELY other thing to sell something without a name, a list, or any testimonial at all.

If you’re wondering…yes. I’ve been lucky enough to accomplish exactly that.

So I know first hand how tough it is to pull something like that.

Anyways, here's the take-home lesson.

At the end of the day, when it comes to choosing who to learn from…

It's not about the size of the claim.

It's about finding someone who understands your journey and can guide you along the way.

Key-words here are 'your journey' and 'you'.

Your journey matters way more than a case study.

You matter way more than you think because YOU are the one learning.

Teachers can show, but you need to learn.

After all, you are the one who needs to gain (and most importantly implement) the knowledge.

So the next time you're tempted by flashy numbers and big promises…

Take a step back and consider who's truly the best fit for you.

It might not be what feels like ‘the obvious choice’.

That’s it for today.

Hope this brought value to you.
